Top 4 Common Problems with Easy Tear Tape and Practical Solutions

2026-10-19

Introduction:
Easy tear tape is a small but vital accessory in modern packaging, providing consumers with a convenient, tool-free opening experience. However, during high-speed packaging and long-distance transportation, various issues can arise. Understanding these common problems and their root causes is essential for packaging engineers and buyers to maintain production efficiency and brand image.

Problem 1: Edge lifting or peeling during transit
Cause: This is typically caused by insufficient initial tack of the adhesive or the presence of dust and release agents on the carton surface.
Solution: Select tape with a higher initial tack suitable for your specific carton material (coated vs. uncoated). Ensure the carton surface is clean and dry before application, and optimize the pressure of the applicator roller to ensure firm contact.

Problem 2: Tape breaking halfway during opening
Cause: Breakage usually results from insufficient tensile strength of the base film or burrs on the cutting blade of the packaging machine.
Solution: Upgrade to a higher-strength PET or OPE film base with a thickness of at least 20μm. Additionally, regularly inspect and replace the cutting blades on your packaging line to ensure a smooth, burr-free cut that prevents tear initiation points.

Problem 3: Printed logos or text easily scratching off
Cause: Poor ink adhesion to the film substrate or the lack of a protective top coating, especially during high-friction transport.
Solution: Utilize high-quality, specialized printing inks with strong adhesion to BOPP or PET. Apply a protective varnish or top-coating over the printed layer. Ensure the final product passes the ISO 2409 cross-cut adhesion test for durability.

Problem 4: Adhesive residue left on the carton after tearing
Cause: The chemical formulation of the adhesive does not match the surface energy of the carton, often occurring on UV-coated or laminated boxes.
Solution: Work closely with your tape manufacturer to customize the adhesive formula based on the specific surface treatment of your cartons. Using a balanced pressure-sensitive adhesive will ensure it bonds securely during transit but releases cleanly without leaving residue upon opening.
