4 Frequent Issues with BOPP Heat Seal Film and How to Fix Them

Learn the solutions to four common BOPP heat seal film problems: air leaks, wrinkling, static jamming, and poor clarity on automated packaging lines.

Introduction:
BOPP heat seal film is highly valued for its excellent optical properties and reliable sealing performance. It is extensively used in automated packaging lines for various consumer goods. Despite its reliability, packaging operators frequently encounter specific challenges during the wrapping process that can reduce efficiency and product waste.

Problem 1: Air leaks or bag breakage after sealing
Cause: Inadequate heat seal temperature or pressure settings, or uneven thickness of the heat seal layer on the film.
Solution: Recalibrate the sealing parameters (temperature, pressure, and dwell time) according to the film's specifications. Ensure the film used has a consistent heat seal layer with a strength of at least 6N/15mm, and verify the sealing jaws are flat and clean.

Problem 2: Film wrinkling during high-speed packaging
Cause: Uneven tension control in the packaging machine or an inappropriate coefficient of friction (COF) on the film surface.
Solution: Adjust the unwind and rewinding tension to match the film's mechanical properties. Specify a BOPP film with a properly balanced COF (typically around 0.3) to ensure smooth travel over the forming collar and prevent wrinkling.

Problem 3: Static electricity causing film jamming
Cause: High surface resistivity of the polypropylene film, especially in low-humidity environments, causing the film to stick to machine parts or attract dust.
Solution: Request BOPP film with anti-static treatment (surface tension ≥38mN/m). Additionally, install static elimination bars on the packaging line near the film unwind and forming areas to neutralize static charges.

Problem 4: Insufficient clarity affecting product display
Cause: Impurities in the raw resin materials or a suboptimal cooling process during the biaxial orientation stage.
Solution: Ensure the film is manufactured using 100% virgin, high-purity resins. Optimize the cooling and stretching processes to guarantee a light transmittance of ≥90% and a haze value of ≤3.0%, ensuring products on the shelf look vibrant and appealing.
