4 Key FAQs About PLA Compostable Heat Seal Film You Need to Know

Understand the critical issues of PLA compostable film, including degradation conditions, heat resistance limits, storage requirements, and cost management.

Introduction:
PLA (Polylactic Acid) compostable heat seal film is at the forefront of the green packaging revolution, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional plastics. Made from renewable resources like corn starch, it is highly valued for its biodegradability. However, moving from traditional plastics to PLA requires understanding its unique handling and end-of-life characteristics.

Problem 1: Misunderstanding of degradation conditions
Cause: Consumers often assume PLA will degrade naturally if thrown in the trash or left outdoors, leading to environmental confusion.
Solution: Clarify that PLA requires industrial composting conditions (around 58°C, high humidity, and specific microbial activity) to break down into water and CO2 within 180 days. Packaging must be clearly marked with EN 13432 or ASTM D6400 logos, and brands should guide consumers on proper disposal.

Problem 2: Poor heat resistance causing deformation
Cause: Standard PLA has a relatively low glass transition temperature (around 55-60°C), meaning it can warp under hot conditions or when sealing hot liquids.
Solution: For applications requiring higher heat resistance, use modified PLA films (such as crystalline PLA or those with heat-resistant additives) that can withstand short-term temperatures above 90°C.

Problem 3: Film becoming brittle or sticking together during storage
Cause: PLA is sensitive to environmental humidity and temperature. Exposure to moisture can cause hydrolysis, making the film brittle or causing layers to block (stick together).
Solution: Store PLA film in a controlled environment (15-25°C, humidity below 50%). Keep it sealed in moisture-proof packaging (like aluminum foil bags) and avoid direct sunlight or proximity to heat sources.

Problem 4: Higher cost compared to traditional films
Cause: The raw material and production costs for PLA are inherently higher than standard PE or PP films, which can deter cost-sensitive buyers.
Solution: Optimize the packaging structure to reduce film thickness (e.g., downgauging from 30μm to 20μm) without compromising performance. Highlight the "eco-friendly" value proposition to consumers, using the sustainable attributes to justify a premium brand image and offset material costs.
